Since the days of djing a rogue high school dance by jacking the schools “assembly” PA system in 6th grade, DJ Russell James has been breaking rules.. and new music! While most 12 year old kids were collecting remote control cars, RJ collected records, and after continually burning out the belt on his dad’s belt drive Sanyo turntable, got his first pair of Technics Turntables at the age of 13... started djing school dances, friends birthdays, random events and  bush parties.. and then got the radio bug!
 
He started his radio internship in Bellingham, Washington (just across the border from Vancouver) at the age of 16. By 18 he was on the air doing overnights on the legendary LG73 in Vancouver, all the while DJing in the hottest clubs in Vancouver. At the age of 20 he helped assemble and manage the Canadian pop group SoulDecision, also producing many tracks for them over the years. Later his tour of radio included Production, Mixshow DJ and host on Z95.3, then later Music Director and Mixshow coordinator at The Beat in Vancouver! RJ has also worked on the air in Calgary, Toronto and for the past couple years has made his home Edmonton, where most of his family has ended up! RJ started in Edmonton as the Music Director and DJ/creator of the 5 o’clock Traffic Jam at 91.7 The Bounce, helping to propel the station from 6th place to 1st place in the Edmonton ratings in just under a year. Then, an opportunity came along to join an amazing team of people whose passion is music.. and to launch a brand new radio station and bring new challenges!
 
Since helping to create, and launch the new HOT 107, DJ Russell James now spins the 5 O’clock HOTMIX, a commercial-free hour of HOT 107 music mixed live every day and If you can’t find RJ kicking around the HOT 107 studios in West Edmonton Mall, he is frequently off playing various private parties in L.A. and scouring the

earth for the hottest NEW music to bring to Edmontonians.
 
In his DJ career Russell has opened for, and/or played private parties for the following;
 
DJ A.M., Justin Timberlake, Joel Madden, Bill Gates, Eva Mendez, Ashanti, Eve, Paul van Dyk, Samuel L. Jackson, Prince, Tracey Morgan, DMX and more.

RJ has held DJ residencies at JOE and Whiskey Saigon nightclubs in Toronto, Cowboys  in Calgary, as well as Bar None, Skybar and Au Bar in Vancouver, he also plays regular annual gigs at the legendary Buffalo Bills in Whistler BC .
 
When he isn’t behind a turntable, Russell is also Hot 107’s Program Director and musical architect
